Description:
The Maserati 5000 GT was introduced in 1959. The car based on the 3500 GT was originally intended to remain a one-off and actually only be built for the Shah of Persia. Due to press reports and a high level of acceptance among Maserati’s well-heeled customers, the decision was made in Modena to produce a small series of the 5000 GT. Maserati supplied the chassis with the engine, which came from the 450 S racing prototype. The bodies were commissioned by the owners themselves. There were bodies from Touring, Frua, Pininfarina or Ghia. The 4.9 liter all-aluminum engine inspired many rulers, actors and industrialists. Aga Khan, Gianni Agnelli and Stewart Granger drove a Maserati 5000 GT. Today, the Maserati 5000 GT is considered the most glamorous road Maserati of all time.
This Maserati 5000 GT was ordered by the US-British actor Stewart Granger, who is best known in Germany for his role as Old Surehand in the Karl May film adaptation. Due to engine problems, which unfortunately all 5000 GT had, it was soon “abandoned” by Stewart Granger. After a very long and meticulous restoration, the car is now fully drivable. The engine overhaul alone took a decade. Many components on the engine have been renewed to reflect the current state of the art. The unit is now stable, suitable for everyday use and achieved around 400 hp on a test stand. It is probably the only really stable example of a Maserati 5000 GT.
